Soluble IL6ST (sgp130) binds to circulating Interleukin-6 (IL6) bound to the soluble form of IL6 receptor alpha (IL6:IL6R-2), preventing binding to IL6ST (gp130) on the plasma membrane, thereby specifically inhibiting IL6 trans-signaling (Jostock et al. 2001).
