Cytosolic argininosuccinate lyase (ASL) catalyzes the reversible reaction of argininosuccinate to form fumarate and arginine. The enzyme has been partially purified from kidney tissue (it was undetectable in liver) and biochemically characterized. The ASL gene has not been directly studied but rather has been identified computationally in the ENSEMBL chicken gene set as two open reading frames each capable of encoding a protein similar to human ASL.
