Mammalian factor H (CFH or FH) can bind both fluid phase and surface-bound C3b. CFH binding to extracellular C3b has the effect of sequestering C3b, preventing further activation of the complement cascade. CFH can also act as a cofactor for factor I, leading to the cleavage and inactivation of bound C3b.

The chicken events of CFH activity have not been verified experimentally but are inferred from the orthologous human events. Predicted chicken complement factor H shows 38% amino acid sequence identity with human CFH.
