In mammals, inactivated C3b (iC3b) undergoes proteolytic cleavage mediated by factor I. This cleavage occurs only if CR1serves as a cofactor. C3d is a fragment of a cleaved C3b which is generated in the course of complement activation. The gene fragment encoding C3d (chC3d) from Roman chicken was cloned and characterized. However the chicken events of C3b cleavage have not been verified experimentally in chicken and are therefore inferred from properties of the orthologous human proteins.
