Glucose enters and leaves cells by facilitated diffusion across the plasma membrane, mediated by the GLUT family of transport proteins. The phosphorylation of glucose in the cytosol prevents it from leaving the cell. Conversely, hydrolysis of glucose 6-phosphate by glucose 6-phosphatase in liver and kidney cells enables glucose generated by gluconeogenesis to be exported from these cells.
