The irreversible reaction of cytosolic glucose and ATP to form glucose 6-phosphate and ADP can be catalyzed by hexokinase 1, hexokinase 2, or glucokinase (Berradi et al. 2005). Three additional proteins, HK-like1, 2, and 3, are predicted to have hexokinase activity based on OrthoMCL analysis of the ENSEMBL chicken gene set.
