The direct reversal of DNA damage is obviously the most straightforward mode of DNA repair. A single-step repair reaction is considerably simpler compared to the multi-step biochemical pathways required in other DNA repair pathways (e.g., excision repair, NHEJ, recombination repair). Except for the alkyltransferase mode of repair that is energetically expensive, a reverse mode of DNA repair is in general also kinetically advantageous as it utilizes single gene product for rapid correction of the damage.
