Expression of ZIC1 in the neural plate border
During gastrulation (HH stage 4), ZIC1 is expressed in neural plate, neural plate border, and anterior epiblast (Khudyakov and Bronner-Fraser 2009). ZIC1 is maintained in the neural plate and is upregulated in the anterior neural folds (Khudyakov and Bronner-Fraser 2009, Williams et al. 2022). TFAP2A is required for expression of ZIC1 in the neural plate border (Rothstein and Simoes-Costa 2020). SOX2 and POU5F3 (OCT4) bind downstream of the ZIC1 coding region, may interact with TFAP2A, and activate ZIC1 expression (Hovland et al. 2022).
