Expression of PAX7 in the neural plate border
PAX7 is expressed in lateral and posterior regions of the neural plate border after expression of MSX1, TFAP2A, and DLX5 have initiated (Khuyakov et al. 2009, Williams et al. 2022). Expression continues in the neural folds (Basch et al. 2006, Khudyakov et al. 2009). The TFAP2A:TFAP2C heterodimer (Rothstein and Simoes-Costa 2020) and MYB (Vadasz et al. 2013) bind the PAX7 gene and activate its expression in the neural plate border. FGF4 can also activate PAX7 expression in extra-embryonic ectodermal cells (Yardley and Garcia-Castro 2012).
