SMAD7 recruits protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) to TGF-beta receptor complex by binding to the PP1 regulatory subunit PPP1R15A (GADD34). ZFYVE9 (SARA) stabilizes the complex by directly interacting with PP1 catalytic subunit, and presumably TGF-beta receptor complex (Shi et al. 2004). This was deduced based on experiments involving recombinant mouse Smad7 and recombinant human PPP1R15A, TGFBR1, TGFBR2 and SARA.
