LC3 family proteins are processed by members of the ATG4 family, which remove a C-terminal residue to create an exposed C-terminal glycine (Kirisako et al. 2000, Tanida et al. 2004, Kabeya et al. 2004, Li et al. 2011). Processed LC3 proteins are sometimes referred to as LC3-I.
