The PITX2 gene encodes a homeobox transcription factor involved in left-right patterning and heart development. The PITX2 gene expression is stimulated by binding of the complex of CITED2 and TFAP2A or TFAP2C homodimers to the AP-2 response elements in the PITX2 promoter (Bamforth et al. 2004, Li et al. 2012).
