Nuclear serine/threonine protein kinase HIPK2 phosphorylates MECP2 on serine residue S80 (Bracaglia et al. 2009). Phosphorylation of MECP2 at S80 correlates with low neuronal activity. Upon neuronal activation, calcium influx stimulates dephosphorylation at S80 (Tao et al. 2009).
