AMPK, activated by CAMKK2-mediated phosphorylation, phosphorylates MAPT (Tau) on serine residues S262, S356 and S396. AMPK-mediated phosphorylation changes microtubule binding properties of MAPT and is involved in development and maintenance of dendritic spines and synaptotoxicity of beta-amyloid oligomers (Thornton et al. 2011, Mairet-Coello et al. 2013).
