Big potassium current channels (BK channels, tetramers of KCNMA1:KCNMB1) in outer hair cells (OHCs) open in response to an influx of calcium ions, thereby causing an efflux of potassium ions which hyperpolarizes the OHC and prevents the OHC from contracting (inferred from mouse homologs and rat homologs).
