Trimmed SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein is transported by COPII-coated ER-to-Golgi transport vesicles to the ERGIC (ER-Golgi Intermediate Compartment) (Mendonça et al, 2021; Boson et al, 2021). The Spike cytoplasmic tail contains COPII binding sites that direct the export of the newly made Spike out of the ER and into the ERGIC where virus assembly starts (Cattin-Ortolá et al, 2021).
