Expression of SQSTM1 (also known as p62) is regulated by NFE2L2 and MAFG binding to the ARE consensus sequence in the promoter (Ishii et al, 2000; Jain et al, 2010). SQSTM1 protein in turn binds the NFE2L2 negative-regulator KEAP1, thus stabilizing NFE2L2 protein levels and establishing a positive feedback loop (Jain et al, 2010; reviewed in Baird and Yamamoto, 2020).
