Stimulation of the mechanosensitive cation channel PIEZO1 by laminar flow shear stress causes an influx of Ca2+ that activates secretion of Adrenomedullin (AM) by endothelial cells (Iring et al. 2019, and inferred from bovine pulmonary endothelial cells in Dschietzig et al. 2001). Shear stress also increases the steady state level of AM mRNA in endothelial cells (Chun et al. 1997).
