RORA, RORB, or RORC bind ROR responsive elements (RREs, ROREs) in the BMAL1 promoter and activate transcription of BMAL1 (inferred from mouse homologs). RORA and presumably RORB and RORC recruit coactivators p300 (EP300), PGC-1alpha (PPARGC1A), and NRIP1 to positively regulate transcription (Poliandri et al. 2011, and inferred from mouse homologs).
The heme receptor NR1D1 (REV-ERBA) competes with the ROR proteins for binding to the same RREs (inferred from mouse homologs). NR1D1 recruits the corepressors NCoR and HDAC3 to repress transcription of BMAL1 (inferred from mouse homologs).
