CLOCK in the BMAL1:CLOCK heterodimer acetylates lysine-538 of BMAL1 (inferred from mouse homologs). The acetylation reaction occurs in the evening at the time when transactivation by BMAL1:CLOCK declines (inferred from mouse homologs). The acetylation is required for efficient interaction with the CRY:PER:kinase complex that represses BMAL1:CLOCK activity (inferred from mouse homologs).
