Complexed Piwil4 binds cleaved transposon RNA
RNA cleaved by Piwil2:piRNA is transferred to Piwil4 (Miwi2 in mouse, HIWI2 in human) in a reaction involving the chaperone Fkbp6:Hsp90 (De Fazio et al. 2011, Xiol et al. 2012, Ichiyanagi et al. 2014). Mael is required for transfer of cleaved RNA from Piwil2 to Piwil4 (Kuramochi-Miyagawa et al. 2010). Piwil4, Tdrd9, and Mael are located in piP bodies, a type of nuage (electron-dense perinuclear material). Piwil4 and Piwil2 are in separate nuages (Aravin et al. 2009).
