Mitochondrial uptake of the three branched-chain amino acids leucine (Leu), isoleucine (Ile), and valine (Val) is mediated by solute carrier family 25 member 44 (Slc25a44), localized in the inner mitochondrial membrane, as demonstrated by studies of studies of knockout mice and of liposomes rconstituted with recombinant protein (Yoneshiro et al. 2019).
