Expression of Eomes in the primitive streak
Eomesodermin (Eomes) is expressed in cells of the proximal posterior epiblast prior to formation of the primitive streak and gastrulation (Ciruna and Rossant 1999, Arnold et al. 2008, Simon et al. 2017). During the first day of gastrulation, Eomes is expressed in the posterior epiblast, in the primitive streak, and in all cells leaving the primitive streak, both mesoderm and endoderm (Probst et al. 2021). Though Eomes is required for exit from pluripotency and formation of mesoderm and endoderm (Russ et al. 2000, Tosic et al. 2019), Eomes-expressing cells are present in anterior mesoderm derivatives and are excluded from posterior mesoderm derivatives (Ciruna and Rossant 1999, Costello et al. 2011).
