Clock acetylates Bmal1 on lysine-544 (lysine-537 of isoform 2)
Clock in the Bmal1:Clock heterodimer acetylates lysine-544 of the canonical Bmal1 isoform (lysine-537 of isoform 2) (Hirayama et al. 2007). The acetylation reaction occurs at zeitgeber 15 (evening) at the time when transactivation by Bmal1:Clock declines (Hirayama et al. 2007). The acetylation is required for efficient interaction with the Cry:Per:kinase complex that represses Bmal1:Clock activity (Hirayama et al. 2007).
