TIM23 SORT complex inserts proteins into inner membrane
The TIM23 Complex resides in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion and transfers precursor proteins to the inner membrane. The presequence of proteins targeted to the inner membrane is transferred to the matrix where it is cleaved. Sequences in the mature region of the protein then interact with the TIM23 complex to halt transfer across the inner membrane and the protein is released laterally into the inner membrane (Glick et al. 1992, Popov-Celeketic et al. 2008). TIM21 is required.
Substrates of the TIM23 complex targeted to the inner membrane include CYB2 (Krayl et al. 2007, Hutu et al. 2008, Popov-Celeketic et al. 2008, Tamura et al. 2009, Mokranjac et al. 2009), DLD (Mokranjac et al. 2009), ATP9 (Leuenberger et al. 1999, Milisav et al. 2001, Tamura et al. 2009), COQ2 (Leuenberger et al. 1999), TIM54 (Leuenberger et al. 1999, Kurz et al. 1999), COX4 (Martinez-Caballero et al. 2007), COX5A (Mokranjac et al. 2003), and ATP2 (Dekker et al. 1997, Mokranjac et al. 2003).
