Cytosolic argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS1) catalyzes the reaction of ATP, aspartate, and citrulline to form argininosuccinate, AMP, and pyrophosphate. The enzyme has been partially purified from kidney tissue (it was undetectable in liver) and biochemically characterized. The ASS1 gene has not been directly studied but rather has been identified computationally in the ENSEMBL chicken gene set as an open reading frame capable of encoding a protein similar to human ASS1.
