Cytosolic pyruvate kinase (PKM2) catalyzes the irreversible reaction of phosphoenolpyruvate and ADP to form pyruvate + ATP. A single entity with pyruvate kinase enzymatic activity has been visualized by starch gel electrophoresis of muscle proteins (Scopes 1968) and cDNA encoding the chicken muscle enzyme has been cloned (Lonberg and Gilbert 1983).
