Biochemical characterization of purified avian PPAT (chicken (Hartman 1963) and pigeon (Caskey et al. 1964; Rowe et al. 1970)) suggests that while both PPAT dimers and tetramers are catalytically active in vitro, PPRP allosterically activates PPAT while AMP and GMP allosterically inactivate it, and activity changes are associated with changes in enzyme multimerization. The specific reaction annotated here, association of active PPAT dimers to form relatively inactive tetramers, its inhibition by PRPP, and its stimulation by AMP and GMP, are inferred from studies of the homologous human enzyme (Holmes et al. 1973).
