Activated mammalian MEK1/2 is a serine/threonine kinase, which phosphorylates and activates ERK1/2. ERK1/2 is then translocates to the nucleus and activates transcription factors.

Chicken MEK2 showes 93% amino acid sequence identity to human MEK2. Multiple sequence alignment of human, mouse and chicken MEK2 by ClustalW allows to predict that the following chicken residues are involved in chicken MEK2 activation: Ser220 and Ser224 that are corresponding to human residues Ser222 and Ser226.
