The majority of RANGAP1 in the cell is conjugated with SUMO1 by the E3 ligase UBE2l (Ubc9) (Knipscheer et al. 1998, Lee et al. 1998). SUMO1 targets RANGAP1 to the nucleoporin RANBP2 (Mahajan et al. 1997).
