SLC25A21, the mitochondrial 2-oxodicarboxylate carrier, mediates the exchange of 2-oxoadipate and 2-oxoglutarate across the inner mitochondrial membrane. While the exchange is reversible, under physiological conditions it proceeds in the direction of 2-oxoadipate import into the mitochondrial matrix and 2-oxoglutarate export (Fiermonte et al. 2001).
