The human gene SLC39A6 encodes the zinc transporter ZIP6 (LIV-1). The gene is oestrogen-regulated and has been implicated in metastatic breast cancer. ZIP6 mediates the transport of zinc into cells, is localized to the plasma membrane and is expressed mainly in hormonal tissues such as breast, prostate and brain (Taylor KM et al, 2003).

The human gene SLC39A14 encodes the zinc transporter ZIP14. This protein is ubiquitously expressed with higher expression seen in heart, liver and pancreas. ZIP14 is localized to the plasma membrane and mediates zinc influx into cells (Taylor KM et al, 2005).
