Cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 (CLCF1 also referred as NNT1 or BSF3) binds to the tripartite CNTFR complex and activates Jak-STAT, MAPK and PI3/Akt signaling pathways in various cell systems. Function of CLCF1 includes neurotrophic and B cell stimulatory effects, as well as neuroimmunoendocrine modulation of corticotroph function. Cellular secretion of CLCF1 requires heteromeric complex formation with other IL-6 family member cytokine receptor-like factor 1 (CRLF1 also called CLF1). It is a secreted receptor belonging to the interleukin-6 family of cytokines. This heteromeric CRLF1:CLCF1 is a stable sectreted complex that acts as a second ligand for ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor (CNTFR) tripartite receptor complex (Elson et al. 2000, Vlotides et al. 2004).
