In the GDP-fucose salvage pathway, beta-L-fucose (beta-Fuc) arising from the turnover of glycoproteins and glycolipids in the liver and other tissues is reutilised via a two-step pathway. The first step is the phosphorylation of L-fucose (L-Fuc) to fucose-1-phosphate (Fuc1P) by L-fucose kinase (FUK) (Hinderlich et al. 2002).
