The human gene SLC29A4 encodes the equilibrative nucleoside transporter 4 (ENT4). It is ubiquitously expressed and mediates the reversible transport of the nucleoside adenosine at acidic pH (this transport is absent at pH 7.4) (Barnes K et al, 2006). ENT4 has also been shown to mediate the transport of biogenic amines such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine. For this reason, ENT4 is also known as the plasma membrane monoamine transporter (PMAT) (Engel K et al, 2004).
