Based on studies in mouse, NPAS4 directly stimulates expression of the CDK5 gene, encoding cyclin-dependent-like kinase 5 (Yun et al. 2013), a serine/threonine protein kinase which is essential for neuronal cell cycle exit and differentiation. In primary cultures of rat neurons, Cdk5 gene expression was not significantly changed upon Npas4 activation (Brigidi et al. 2019).
