Coronavirus viroporins (3a) contain cargo sorting motifs in their cytoplasmic domain, so they get localized by the cell's protein transport system to the cell membrane (Tan et al, 2004). SARS-CoV-2 3a functions as potassium ion channel triggering the NLRP3 inflammatory pathway (Xu et al, 2022).
