The open reading frame 7a of SARS-Cov-2 mRNA7 has a length of 366 nt and encodes the 121 aa preprotein 7a. After cleavage of the signal peptide, protein 7a has a length of 106 aa. Another ORF of mRNA7 has a length of 132 nt, encoding the 43 aa protein 7b (Wu et al, 2020).

In HEK 293 T cells protein 7a showed a large presence at the Golgi compartment, where it might play a role in mediating the host cell trafficking process (Lee et al, 2021).
