In the presence of extracellular acids, the OTOP1 channel passively transports H+ ions along the concentration gradient from the extracellular region to the cytosol (inferred from the mouse homolog). OTOP1 is expressed in type III taste cells where it is responsible for activating depolarization in response to sour (acidic) compounds.
