STING is a facilitator of innate immune signaling that acts as a sensor of cytosolic DNA from bacteria and viruses and promotes the production of type I interferon. RNA viral infection can also lead to the activation of STING through viral–cellular membrane fusion and viral infection-induced mitochondrial damage. SARS-CoV-2 ORF3a (3a) has the ability to specifically antagonize the immune activation induced by cGAS-STING by binding to STING and selectively suppressing cGAS-STING-mediated downstream signaling (Rui et al, 2021).
