An unknown dehydrogenase catalyzes the oxidation of 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (4-HBz) to 4-hydroxybenzoate (PHB). This reaction is inferred from the same reaction in yeast, where the dehydrogenase HFD1 acts as catalyst (Payet et al., 2016; Stefely et al., 2016). In humans, the four dehydrogenases ALDH3A1, ALDH3A2, ALDH3B1, and ALDH3B2 are orthologs of HFD1. However, there are no reports of one of these enzymes localizing to mitochondria, so the identity of the human catalyst is unknown.
