Degradation of laminin-111, -332 by Mmp3, 7, 12, 13, 19, 20 and plasmin
Laminins are degraded by MMP3 (Okada et al. 1986, Bejanaro et al. 1988), MMP7 (Miyazaki et al. 1990), MMP12 (Chandler et al. 1996), MMP13, MMP20 (Pirilä et al. 2003), MMP14 (Ohuchi et al. 1997), MMP19 (Sadowski et al. 2005) and plasmin (Chen & Strickland 1993, Gutiérrez-Fernández et al. 2009). In most of this literature it is not clear which subunit of the laminin trimer has been cleaved; MMPs are reportedly capable of cleaving all three subunits of laminin-332, namely laminin beta-3 (Udayakumar et al. 2003), alpha-5 (Bair et al. 2005) and gamma-2 (Gianelli et al. 1997, Pirilä et al. 2003, Koshikawa et al. 2005). Plasmin cleavage of laminin-111 yields fragments with sizes that correspond to the alpha and beta/gamma components (Gutiérrez-Fernández et al. 2009). In this reaction laminin is represented with all 3 component peptides cleaved.
