Per proteins are ubiquitinylated

Polyubiquitination of Per proteins is directed by the Beta-TrCP1 component of SCF E3 ubiquitin ligase located in the cytosol. The polyubiquitinated Per proteins are recognized and degraded by the 26S proteasome. Degradation of Per proteins occurs during the night and is necessary to allow new transcription of Bmal1:Clock/Npas2 (Arntl:Clock/Npas2) targets in the morning during the circadian cycle.
