Expression of Gbx2 in posterior neural plate
Expression of Gbx2 in the posterior neural plate is strongly enhanced by Sox2, though it is unclear if Sox2 directly binds the Gbx2 gene (Iwafuchi-Doi et al. 2012, reviewed in Kondoh et al. 2016). Otx2 produced in the anterior neural plate is able to repress expression of Gbx2 even in the presence of Sox2 (Iwafuchi-Doi et al. 2012). The mutual antagonism of Gbx2 and Otx2 is believed to regulate midbrain and hindbrain patterning (Wassarman et al. 1997, Li and Joyner 2001, Martinez-Barbera et al. 2001, Wurst and Bally 2001).
